| house buying blues |
[28 Oct 2009|11:46pm] |
We aren't going to close on the house until mid-next week because the dude from Wells Fargo is an absolute idiot. It's all good, though. We got the things we wanted to be fixed on the house fixed and we'll still get the Obama money. It's just been super stressful, mainly for Bre since she's the one taking care of most of the dirty work - I'm just opening my wallet.
Other news is that Brena and I are in couples counseling and it's going swell. Well, technically she had been going to a counselor to deal with a wide rang of issues for a while and her counselor had the idea of me coming along every once in a while.

[08 Aug 2009|12:49pm] |
So, I started a music blog; nothing ground-breaking, but it's kinda fun! I've tried this a few times and I always get bored; but since, for a few months now, I've been going through my music files and cleaning it up/deleting, I'll be hopefully more apt to upload stuff I discover/ re-discover/ want to share.
Bookmark it if you like good music! Or if you want to ask me to upload something!!

| 10 Weeks Along |
[05 Aug 2009|03:50pm] |
Brena went to the doctor today. Our child is ten weeks along. So, we're looking at a March 2010 baby.
She got a sonogram and I would post it, but it pretty much looks like every sonogram ever taken. I can kinda make out what looks like an alien head attached to the kid's normal head: AWESOME.

| What was there to bring him all that way? |
[14 Jul 2009|07:50am] |
Rafe was moving on. He didn't know it, but he was leaving them behind. He'd have roommates, guys from rich families, who'd invite him home for vacation, take him skiing, sailing. He'd wear a tuxedo for debutante parties where he'd meet girls from Smith and Mount Holyoke, philosophy majors, English majors, girls with ideas who were reading the same books he was reading and other books, too, who could say things he wouldn't have exepcted them to say. He'd get interested in one of these girls and go on road trips with his friends to her college. She'd come to New Haven. They'd rendezvous in Boston and New York. He'd meet her parents. And on the first day of his next trip home, honorable Rafe would enter Mary Ann's house and leave half an hour later with a sorrowful face and heart leaping with joy. There wouldn't be many more trips home, not after that. What was there to bring him all that way?
- "Two Boys and a Girl", from The Night In Question: Stories by Tobias Wolff, 1996, originally published in Antaeus magazine.
For some reason, I find the following passage really depressing, for a number of reasons that I don't think I could really put into words that would make sense to anyone but myself. I guess one would be the thought of a life open to the above posssibility/possibilities, while Rafe is young.

| My Trip To Albuquerque, New Mexico (July 27th - August 5th) |
[07 Aug 2008|07:53pm] |
Friday, the 25th I didn't sleep after work; I was able to go to Cinemark to get a ticket for the 7:45 showing of "X-Files 2" and to Sunfresh to get some beer and wine and stuff for the birthday party. I met Roland at the movie theater around 7:25 or so. The movie was very "meh" and I was kinda dozing off during it because I was tired. Afterwards, we met back at my place and got the place ready for the party. Brena came over and soon so did James and white Derryck and Justin, then black Derryck, then Wally and his group. It was pretty fun. We hung out in the backyard and in the kitchen mostly. Keely, Queen James, and Lauren came over later and only stayed about 45 minutes. We played pin the tail on the donkey an hung out more. Franco gave me a birthday shot of this really good tequila; also Wally gave me two toots of coke. Apparently Brena and I went to bed pretty early for it being my birthday party, which is funny.
Saturday, the 26th I went to Brother Garret's place for the adult barbecue. It was cool - the men ate in the backyard on the patio and the women were in the kitchen and dining room. After eating, then men went outside to play washers and horseshoes. It was fun. I left at 7:10 and went back to my place and hung out until Brena was done with grabbing a drink with her mom and friend. I called into work because I really didn't want to go in. Brena and I packed my stuff and hung out, then went over her place. We were able to sleep for about 4 hours or so.
Sunday, the 27th We dropped off B's car at her cousin's, then went to the airport. We were kinda stressed because it turned out she was on a different flight from the Colorado stop to ABQ. But we were able to get her on my flight on standby, so that was good. We sat by each other to CO, but not to ABQ (she sat a row in front of me). There was also minor rental car problems because they needed to SEE proof of a confirmation number for my return flight. The only number I had was on my email and there was no wifi for my laptop. So, I had to buy a 24-hr wifi pass for fucking $5, so I could connect and get to my email. But it worked and we got a free upgrade because there were no economy cars available. So, that was cool. On the way to the motel, we stopped by a thrift store and I ended up buying two books for a total of $3, The Autobigraphy of Malcolm X and Fyodor Dostoyefsky's "The Brothers Karmozikov". I couldn't check into the motel until 2pm for some reason, so we wasted time getting Subway (where we talked to a really cool dude about what there is to do around ABQ) and the mall. When we were done, it was time to check in, so I checked in "by myself" and got a room in the back of the motel, which is good since Brena was technically not supposed to be there. We got settled in, then swam. After this we got dressed and I set out to find the church I have my eye on, Good News Baptist, and we stopped by a ghetto mini-mart/grocer to stock up. We split the $54 total and went back to the motel to put the food away. Then we walked to a nearby restaurant called Little Anita's. I had a bad night. After sleeping for few hours, I then woke up every two hours until I finally got up at 8am. My back was killing me because of the motel beds.
July 28th, my birthday! We went to Old Town ABQ and went in the Museum of Science and Natural History and saw the science and dinosaur stuff, which was pretty cool. I bought a few postcards in the gift shop. Then we went across the street to this cool Native American shop, but Brena convinced me I could get the cool mug I saw for cheaper at the four corners. We drove around a bit and hit downtown ABQ. We walked around a lot and it was beautiful. Haha, we walked and stumbled upon where they were filming a t.v. show called "Breaking Bad". That was random; the lady who asked us to kinda move out of the radius told us "we tell people it's a deodorant commercial, but it's actually..." So that was neat. I got a Homeland Security Native American t-shirt in one shop and that was about it. But downtown was really cool.
Tuesday, the 29th I was once again in pain when I woke up. I actually woke up at like, 5am and slept in the other bed so as not to disturb Brena with my tossing and turning. I eventually got up at like 7:30 and took a shower, then woke Brena up. We got going around 8:30 or so, maybe even 9. We took a detour to see TinkerTown, which was an alright little side stop, but the way we took, we had to drive almost back to ABQ to turn around and drive to Santa Fe. We did stop by a thrift store kinda all by itself and I ended up getting two books, "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" and "Great Expectations" (turns out I already had GE, but whatev.) This turned into a little spat between B and I, which lasted all day, in varying degress of snarky. We went to downtown Santa Fe, around the shopping area and whatnot; a lot of walking around, not a whole lot of buying, which is good. That was about all we did and tensions were high on the drive back, too. Brena seemed to calm down but I think that was because she was placated by the free magazines we got at the public library (they had a little rack of free mags - she got a Vogue and I got a number of issues of The Nation and a couple of Newsweeks.) We were going to try to sleep in seperate beds because of my back, but Brena's bedsheets had what looked like blood stains on it. After determining it wasn't her or me, I took it to the front desk. The lady was rude and unconcerned. At first she wanted to blame me; then I told her, no and she said it may have been the cleaning crew. I told her I needed another sheet. She then told me that "you have another bed, right?" I was appalled, so I left the sheet with them (I wasn't going to "take it back with you" like she suggested). There was more to it, but I just don't feel like going into it. So, anyway, we were sleeping in the other bed and the lights totally went out! First thought was that the lady at the front desk turned them off in my room, but it turned out to be a whole city grid, highway and all. It was kinda spooky. We drove around to look around the city and that was neat.
Wednesday, the 30th We went to the Albuquerque Zoo and I thought it was really neat and I had a lot of fun. We came back around 2p or so and Bre slept, but I went to swim. I swam, then put some suntan lotion on and laid out. Some dude with a bike (figured he was a drifter) came in and swam a little bit. I jumped in again and some of his friends came in. They were obvious drifters and two of them were going on about how they kicked some other couples' asses at the Circle K. Apparently they lived under a bridge somewhere and they gave me a beer, plus two shots of their cheap-ass vodka. They swam around a lot and started getting all weird and violent with each other, so I split. I took a shower and got dressed and went to stand in line for the Coheed and Cambria show. I got there at like 5:30 I think and I had a decent place in line. I struck up conversation with the dude next to me and his friends and he ended up buying me a bottle of water from the little vendor girl walking around. Soon after this I asked him if he'd hold my spot and I ran to get my phone from the car, then to get two slices of pizza from across the street. I wanted my phone so I could surf the 'net to cure my boredom and I gave the dude a slice of pizza. Once inside I went up to the balcony and I was the first person there. It ended up filling up by the time the show started, though. Russian Circles was excellent, Secret Machines were alright, and Coheed was AWESOME. People near me were lame and did not appreciate the Secret Machines, but that's not my fault that people have horrible taste in music. Still made me sad, though.
SECRET MACHINES setlist: 01. *New Song* 02. Alone, Jealous and Stoned 03. Lightning Blue Eyes 04. Sad and Lonely 05. *New Song*
Choeed and Cambria setlist: Setlist: 01. No World For Tomorrow 02. Gravemakers and Gunslingers 03. Ten Speed (of God's Blood and Burial) 04. A Favor House Atlantic 05. The Suffering 06. Feathers 07. Everything Evil > Unknown > Devil In Jersey City > Everything Evil (cont.) 08. Blood Red Summer 09. The Running Free 10. In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
ENCORE: 01. Welcome Home > Unknown > Extended Jam (15-20 minutes)*
* the jam lasted so long that even some diehards left! haha! It started out as a jam, then eventually everyone left the stage one by one except the drummer (who soloed for about 10 minutes)...then everyone came back to finish the jam. It was excellent!
Thursday, the 31st We got going at like, 9:30 or so and made our way up to Roswell to see the museum. It was alright; I mainly wanted to go because I <3 Aliens, I also went to the store across the street and got a t-shirt. I also called a number and got directions to a signpost that signaled where the UFO crash site was! So, that was cool and we almost ran out of gas! We were going one way to get to ABQ but I called that same number and he said there wasn't a gas station for 90 miles. So, we went back to town (praying the whole way) and barely made it.
Friday, the 1st We went to the Four Corners, which lasted ALL DAY. We took a long way to get there, did our thing there (pictures, she bought something from the Native Americans), and went back. On the way back, about 40 miles outside of Albuquerque, we stopped off and looked at the sky. I saw a shooting star and the sky was BEAUTIFUL. It was awesome. When we got back, we decided we needed some beer, so we walked to Circle K to get some. On the way, some drunk white trash couple yelled at Bre for looking over at them. We just ignored them. But New Mexico law says I can't buy any alcohol when someone with me doesn't have an ID proving they are also over 21. So, we walked back to the hotel and got Bre's ID, then got the beer. But we only drank like half of one beer each and fell asleep.
Saturday, the 2nd We got going late, but we stopped by a record store so i could look around. Didn't find anything, so we ate at a Shoney's! I haven't seen a Shoney's in FOREVER. After eating, we went to this big outdoor flea market. I got a t-shirt and I got James a t-shirt because they were so cheap. We stayed for maybe an hour and a half because people were starting to close up. We got back and Bre laid down to watch t.v. and I swam and laid out for about half an hour or so.
Sunday, the 3rd I went to the service at Good News Baptist. I had hoped the size of the church building would mean it was a big church congregation but it's a pretty small group. That kinda sucks, but they were nice and all. When I got back, Brena had packed some stuff and hung out. I didn't go to the evening service at Good News because I wanted to hang on to the time I had left. We were going to go to a mini-golf place, but we ended up going into a Goodwill and I picked up a bunch of cool books! A lot of awesome finds!
Monday, the 4th We checked out of the Rodeway Inn at 11am. We had time to kill so we got something to eat and walked around the same mall we had walked around when we first got to ABQ. After checking into the Days Inn, we hung around until we left to go to Sandia Peak, for the tram ride thing. It was a little dissapointing since it wasn't a "dress up" type place and wasn't what we thought it was, in that regard. But the ride was cool and all that. Afterwards, we grabbed Arby's and hung out back at the motel and I went online, downloading albums I wasn't able to with the slow connection at Rodeway.
Tuesday, the 5th We had time to kill after checkout, so we went back to Nob Hill to go back to the store where Brena saw these shoes she wanted. We got those, then drove around talking, before going toward the airport. I stopped to fill up the car, then get Burger King before turning in the car. After turning the car in, we actually got an earlier flight from ABQ to Denver! But that just meant we had a longer wait at Denver. We hooked up the computer and watched a movie. On the flight back to KC we sat in the 8th row, which meant we were by the emergency door. Upon getting to KC, I took the economy parking bus to get my car, but Brena had told me B6. Turns out it was in the A lot. I had to make calls on the little phone booth thing to get a bus to pick me up and take me to the A lot. I still couldn't find it and there was a parking attendent driving around. He was really nice and I was able to find my car.

[21 Jul 2008|10:45am] |
I ate two twelve inch pancakes at the diner downtown and my reward was being able to write my name on the wall. Most people included a quote and mine was "Forget Gatsby, this was MY American dream."
:)
p.s. never want to eat pancakes again. ever.

Last night was the last night of Shakespeare in the Park, performance of "Othello". I parked at work and walked to meet Keely at the entrance. We had dressed up; I brought the wine and she brought the crackers and cheese. It was fun and I liked the play a lot. I hadn't been to one of these performances since 2005, so I'm glad I was able to make it this year.

| friday and saturday |
[29 Jun 2008|04:34am] |
It got rained out at the Free Movie Friday at Crown Center, which means I have still not seen the whole Goonies movie. But they had fireworks, which was so cool. After that I hung out with Eddie and he dragged me to two gay bars, but we didn't stay too long. Then we went to Westport and, being a little tipsy, I got really hungry and I bought and ate two chicken gyros from the white truck. Then it was crazy - I saw some dude running from the cops on foot and a bunch of them tackled the dude. The guy was totally resisting and talking crap and I just stood there, eating my gyro. After they hauled him off, the copy came over to me and asked me what I saw. I was all "YEAH TOTALLY DUDE HE WAS RESISTING I SAW IT" and he asked for my name and number. After this I turned around and couldn't find Eddie. So, I bought ANOTHER gyro and sat on the back of my car, reading an article about Tech N9ne before I said screw it and just went home.
Yesterday J+J, Steve, Courtney, and Lopez all went to Oceans of Fun. It was alright, but Worlds of Fun is tons better (more to do). We hit up the 21+ bar/swimming area and chilled for a while. It was funny; in the bar/swimming area, I laid eyes on a super good-looking woman with beautiful eyes and freckles and I kept talking to the group about her and they told me the girl reminded them of Brena - freckles, pretty eyes, thin, with a pair of those big "bug" glasses women seem to be wearing nowadays. We got bored, so James and I took off to the kid/adult part and screwed around in there for a while, making obscene jokes. Then we got everyone to go to the wading pool. It's this big pool area that has these huge waves come on every 10 minutes for about 7 minutes. Totally easy to drown, haha. After this we got something to eat (way, way pricey, bad idea), then Steve James and I went on a couple of rides. Then we kinda tried to decide what to do, walked around, etc. Courtney and James went on the Monsoon, but I couldn't handle the height going up the stairs. I got panicky and couldn't handle it. So, i just went in the Wave Pool again and hung out and looked at pretty women until we were ready to leave.
When we got back, we went to see that movie "Wanted". My cousin joined us and, afterwards, went back to the townhome and hung out. Wally, Duffet, and some drunk redneck came by, but they were all loud and obnoxious. Apparently they guzzled free beer backstage at some Boys Like Girls after party. I don't even think they went to the actual concert or know who Boys Like Girls is, which makes it that much more random.

[26 Jun 2008|04:36pm] |
Working mornings for the last two weeks; might possibly be working mornings even longer, which is awesome.
Busy making all kinds of plans:
Tonight - going to Lions Park in Bonner Springs, KS, with the church dudes for basketball
Friday - Happy Hour with co-workers and "Free Movie Fridays" at Crown Center to see The Goonies (never seen it), possibly by myself. :(
Saturday - Oceans of Fun, a water park here in MO
"Shakespeare In the Park" next week with Keely and friends - we're gonna dress up and bring a blanket and wine and cheese/crackers like dorks
July 4th - Barbeque at parents', party at Matt's way out in Hicksville, KS (bonfire, free drinks, etc.)...possibly going with Lopez
July 19th - The Gaslights/ (CD release for) Lights and Siren show at Davey's Uptown Rambler's Club (you wanna come out, Roland? both are great bands)
and, of course, my trip to Albuquerque in late July/early August. Checking out the place and seeing Secret Machines/Coheed and Cambria!!!

| I learned two things today. |
[18 Jun 2008|02:08pm] |
I am covering the morning shift for this week and next and I forgot how much I missed feeling like I was a part of society, as opposed to a creature of the night being on the midnight shift. Anyway, I have been reading like crazy because of the temporary shift change.
So, I have learned to things today: - There is a death metal band called Deicide. I always thought they were named so as a deliberate misspelling of the word "decide". Untrue! "Deicide" means "the killing of a god; either the God of a monotheistic religion, or one of the gods of a polytheistic religion".
- I am currently more than halfway through The Stranger by Albert Camus, I realized that Meursault's crime of killing an Arab sounded familiar. So I looked up the lyrics to the Cure song, "Killing An Arab" and it's totally based on said crime.
That is all.

have a nice life - hunter |
] |
So, after work I tried to sleep and couldn't. I was almost going to bail out on the event, but I decided to down an energy drink (nasty to me now) and go for it. The event was the American reception for an old church friend's wedding (he had it in Mexico). My whole family, in a rare show of solidarity, all made it.
Keep in mind, I haven't seen most of these people since 2000, at the very least since 2003. The story is this: my family attended Amazing Grace Baptist Church from like 1986/7 until 2000, when my mom and dad had finally had enough of the pastor's pettiness and grudges and left to go to another church. Well, us kids just kinda kept going to the church because we were able to be "independent" from our parents. Well, when we all moved away from home, our church attendence sort of petered out. My oldest brother and I would still go sparingly up until he went to the army and we stopped going all together. Since 2001 I had kinda left it all alone and didn't really think about anything having to do with religion or spirituality. I was kinda, "eh, whatever", though I did a bit of searching during this time and was able to confirm my beliefs and really kinda map out what I specifically believed and held dear.
So, after mid to late 2003, when I went to the army, I kinda gave up on church, didn't really care about it. Fast forward to 2006, when Heather died in Morocco and I saw the pastor and his wife at the memorial service. It was a simple exchange of hellos and whatnot; the pastor can hold a grudge like no one's business, so it was all very rushed. As some may know, two months after this my niece passed away and we had a funeral at my sister and her husband's church, Fairview Baptist. I thought they were very respectful and did a wonderful job with it (considering they had known my sister and her husband for about 4 months at that time). That stuck with me and, when I had decided I needed something different than what I had at that time (the back and forth with Brena, drinking because of the pain of losing both Heather and Stephenie, etc.), I started going to Fairview and eventually joined.
I say all that because, well, being around Amazing Grace people and whatever is like being around a first love. No matter how far you stray and don't talk or have any communication, once you see that person it's like, you feel so comfortable with them again and you remember those feelings and memories. Everyone we saw at the reception was so nice and we were soon joking around and talking just like it was 1997, 1998, or 1999 again. It was like we had never left, except everyone aged. I was expecting some people to be reserved toward our family because we left, but it seemed like it didn't matter at that moment. We got in a picture with the bride and groom and everyone caught up with everyone. My older brother and I sat next to middle child of the pastor and the groom's dad's sister and we laughed and laughed like we had never left. I usually have one or two truly surreal experiences a year; this is definitely the one for this year. Last year was when I drove by the Amazing Grace building in a fit of nostalgia. Now THAT was weird: it was like I stepped back in time and I didn't belong there. Not in a harsh way, but kinda like driving by old haunts. I felt I was looking at a picture of my past and I was ruining it by driving through it. The reception was in an area that was also filled with too many memories; of my first "adult" relationship, of being back in the church days when we would go door to door and "witness" and pick up kids for church, etc. On the way home, I was kinda silent and didn't really know what to think. So, I made a turn and tried to find the old house of said ex-girlfriend's grandma. Of course, 7 years later, the grandma is probably dead or in a nursing home. But it was weird seeing that house again. On the way home I was also thinking of taking up Charlie's offer of coming to Amazing Grace on any given Sunday night for their after service "fellowship lunches" and it would be quite the trip to start attending again, but I wouldn't dare - it would never be the same and it would tarnish the absolutely precious memories I have of being there. It really was a huge part of all our lives. We all were a part of something great and we've all gone completely seperate ways. I'm taking off to another state next year; Andy is still helping in church; Josh isn't even going anywhere anymore, William and Aaron don't go anymore and have a number of kids between them; Stephen is agnostic; James doesn't go; Irene is the church secretary apparently; some are just hanging around (like Helen); Fransisco doesn't go; Jaime is up in Indiana doing the college thing; the other Jaime is going to Fairview; so is my sister; Jasmine and her husband are helping in church; I just played b-ball with Mike and Joe on Thursday; Matthew just got married; Carlos is apparently living in L.A. trying to be an actor; but alot of people have come and gone.
What was crazy was that the pastor and his wife weren't there because, get this, they're in Albuquerque, NM, attending a Spanish Baptist Missions Conference or something. HAHA...so I guess that gave me the opportunity to tell everyone I want to move out there next year.

| Cloud Cult (Live!) |
[11 Mar 2008|12:35am] |
I just got back from seeing them at Davey's Uptown Ramblers Club over on Main Street. It was so awesome. I just got into them so it's a nice coincidence that they came around pretty quickly after I heard about them. They played both of the songs I wanted and a lot of the stuff I wasn't as familiar with was still really great. The craziest thing, they have these painters on stage with them and they paint the whole time (except one of them sings and the other plays trumpet for like parts of songs); then, at the end, they sell them to the highest bidder (on a bid sheet at the merch table.)
I had met up with two people from work because one of them had 4 free tickets! I bought her a drink and I was going to buy her another to make up for the price of the ticket, but she wasn't drinking much and she said she got them for free anyway. So, I had a great time. The opening band was extremely mediocre and got worse as they played. We didn't even bother with the second band, opting to have a little movie discussion session at the bar instead.

[20 Feb 2008|07:48pm] |

Had to wake up at 7am today to take my car over to a car place in KS. They did a not-so-cheap diagnostic and told me I'm pretty much going to need a new transmission due to the car going so long without a transmission oil change. So, we fill up the car with the oil, get an oil change, etc. and it starts running ok. I leave to go to church tonight and it's acting up again - RPMs shooting up to 5-6 when I am barely going 30 MPH. So, I probably will have to end up taking it to the car dealer tommorrow and seeing if I can get it replaced for free. Turns out, honda transmissions have a habit of dying early anyway, so I'll see if they don't notice I pretty much messed it up.

I am finally the owner of a Dell Inspiron notebook. I am awesome, bow before me.
Actually, what sucks is that I may have to get my transmission replaced on my car. Which means I'll be without solid transportation for a while. Not the end of the world, but I'm not the smartest dude - with my income tax (filed yesterday - should be in my account in 10 days) I am paying off some stuff with most of it and I'm dropping $300 on a new external hard drive (this time it's 1 terrabyte!)
